Our Mares

What makes a good mare?

  • Correct conformation.
  • A nice uphill build for dressage.
  • Suspension and rhythm at a trot.
  • A Well balanced ground covering canter.
  • Tremendous heart, and yet enough spunk and shine to show off in the ring.
  • All of the above!

Everybody has their wish list!. A true sporthorse should be athletic enough to do any discipline. It should be able to move well, but if you had to live with the mare it would be nice if she was actually easy to be around, not the induced hormonally kind but a mare that was actually kind, willing to work, and wanting to be with you. Each of our mares has been hand picked for that kind of temperament. I have 4 children ages: 13,11,7 & 3. These girls have to be trustworthy reliable friends, not just our senior girls but even the two coming 3 year olds.

Who does the breaking and riding on this farm? I do, Maria. Yes I actually do still climb in a saddle just with a better sense of mortality now. I had broken and trained babies for the track when I was much younger and I also did rehab work bringing back injured horses that had been locked in stalls for sometimes months, and giving a foundation to 2 year olds just starting their careers. I used to joke but it really was half true some of my favorite rides were usually "psychopaths".

So maybe I like a little more thoroughbred even in my warmbloods as it seems to give them more heart and fight. Arielle, at 13 makes a great first ride rider for our young girls now as she weighs almost nothing. See her new baby Reba and look for them at shows, in hand and in the saddle this year. We are now looking forward to some extremely talented Donatelli II foals this year out of our thoroughbred mares.
